Radiosurgery

  • Intracranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS):

This non-invasive procedure is an excellent treatment modality for selected patients with brain tumors. This procedure targets the tumors achieving high rates of local control as shown in multiple studies using single fractionation (a single treatment) on an outpatient basis. Whether treating primary or secondary disease, ION’s approach to providing care is always patient-centered. Plans are designed to selectively target the tumor based on the specifics of your unique situation to ensure optimal results.

    Extracraneal Radiosurgery:

This technique is an excellent non-invasive modality of treatment for metastatic disease to the lungs, liver and bone and primary tumors as well.

    Radiosurgery and how it works

In medicine, radiation has been used to treat cancer and other abnormalities with good results for many years. Today it is prescribed in one form or another for half of all cancer patients.

Pure energy delivered in the shape of beams, radiation works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells so they can no longer reproduce. The doctors of ION prescribes the amount, or dose, of radiation and the method of administering it in much the same way as drugs are prescribed.

Stereotactic radiosurgery, or SRS Stereotactic body or SBRT radiosurgery is the most precise method of delivering external beam radiation. It has been used for some time by neurosurgeons to treat vascular abnormalities and tumors in the brain, both benign and malignant. Recent advances in imaging, patient positioning, and targeting have all made this technique appropriate for the treatment of cancers in any parts of the body.

Diagnostic images taken before treatment including computed tomography (CT), Positron Emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) help determine where to aim the radiation. The beams are shaped to match the contours of the tumor and are delivered from many different angles around the body, all converging precisely at the planned target location. SRS and SBRT ultra-high precision destroys tumors with high doses of radiation, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. In this way Radiosurgery provides a non-invasive alternative to surgery, allowing treatment of some otherwise inoperable tumors.

Conventional methods of radiation, could take weeks of daily treatment sessions to deliver the same dose. Using Radiosurgery, either a single or a few, never exceeding five session treatment, is sufficient. It does not require anesthesia or hospitalization.
